Will Your PC Turn to a Pumpkin In October

Windows 10 End of Life – Whats the worst that can happen?

Windows 10 End of Life – The impending demise of Windows 10 is finally round the corner.  It’s like Microsoft are sending this reliable, old Operating System to a digital retirement home.

I am asked a big question almost every day:

“What if I’m still clinging to my trusty Windows 10 machine & don’t want to upgrade, or replace it?”

Am I doomed?  Will my computer spontaneously combust?

The short answer is… probably not. Your computer won’t suddenly turn into a pumpkin at midnight. You technically can keep using Windows 10 after the official end-of-life date BUT there are massive risks associated with leaving machines on an outdated Operating System.  Generally, in business those risks are considered to be too perilous if you value your data.

Here are some of the points you should consider:

  • Security Risks: Without regular security updates, your Windows 10 system will become more vulnerable to viruses and malware. Hackers are always looking for vulnerabilities, and an unsupported operating system is like leaving your front door wide open with a sign saying “Free Business Data!”.
  • Compatibility Issues: New software and hardware are constantly being developed with the latest operating systems in mind. Eventually, you might find that your favourite apps no longer work, or that shiny new printer refuses to communicate with your old machine.
  • Missing Out on the Fun: New operating systems often come with cool features and improvements, efficiency and compatibility.

So, what are your options?

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11: This is the recommended option. It’s like trading in your classic car for a brand new model with all the latest safety features and fuel efficiency. (Just make sure your hardware is compatible – you don’t want to end up Windows 11 which that your old computer can’t handle – we are providing recommendations, based on every clients’ hardware estate.
  2. If your old machine cannot cope with Windows 11, then you can purchase an Extended Security Licence for each machine, these are priced around £100 and might help older equipment that runs outdated, or aged software, such as CNC machines.  This cost normally doubles each year you opt for it, making the second and third years very, very expensive.
  3. The alternative is to replace the machine and migrate your data and applications.
  4. Or finally, stick with Windows 10. It might be okay for a while, but eventually, you’ll need to address the issue, hopefully not when ransomware attacks and the business is damaged financially or reputationally.
